Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay learned to love the arts from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to use the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the trash of one of members of the jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist right after college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
